With the release of archival music and documentaries on the Beatles,
plus a resurgence of interest in their music, interaction in
rec.music.beatles increased to often-unmanageable levels (300+ posts
per day). Readers using limited ISP resources can be overwhelmed when
postings reach this level. Finding concrete information amidst the
plethora of posts is not merely daunting...it can be an unmanageable
task. Following the lead of other newsgroups in similar situations,
it's been proposed that two new moderated groups be added to the
rec.music.beatles hierarchy: rec.music.beatles.info, for brief press
releases and news; and rec.music.beatles.moderated, for more in-depth
investigation and discussion. Rec.music.beatles itself would remain
intact and unchanged. There is a long-standing Usenet precedent for a
1 --> 3 evolution from one original newsgroup to the "triplex" format,
and this proposal is based on that structure. Also, for the ease of
those whose providers do not add in new rec* newsgroups and for those
whose costs would increase to download multiple groups, all postings
published in the moderated groups would be crossposted to
rec.music.beatles.
